If you’ve ever suffered from depression, you know how debilitating it can be. It can touch every part of your life, from eating and sleeping to your work, relationships, and how you see yourself as a person.

Feelings of sadness and disconnect can range from a mild case of the blues to clinical depression requiring medical treatment.

Can Aromatherapy Help?

Yes, it can. This is not to say that aromatherapy can “cure” depression – but it can help ease the anxiety, tension, stress and fear that are often part of the depression package. Aromatherapy is also useful for insomnia, low energy and poor concentration.

How Does Aromatherapy Work?

Aromatherapy works by boosting the body’s internal healing process. Inhaling essential oils stimulates the olfactory nerves (sense of smell), which send signals to the brain’s limbic system, which, in turn, triggers an emotional, physiological, endocrine and / or immune system response. Voila! You get the therapeutic effect!

Published clinical studies show positive results on (among other things) sleep problems and emotional, stress-related disorders. Although aromatherapy can help ease the symptoms of depression, it’s best to use aromatherapy to support other treatments if your depression is severe or unmanageable.

Essential Oils for Depression

Try using some of the following essential oils to help ease the various symptoms of your depression.

Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon and Orange to lift mood. Caution: these oils can cause sunburn when applied to your skin before sun exposure.

Chamomile, frankincense, lavender and sandalwood for relaxation and to help you sleep.

Cedar, chamomile, frankincense, lavender and sandalwood for anxiety, tension and frazzled nerves.

Peppermint and rosemary for an energy boost and to help improve mental clarity and concentration. Caution: DO NOT use rosemary if you have high blood pressure or epilepsy.

Clary sage, geranium, lavender and rose to balance your system (including hormones.)

Using Essential Oils Safely

Always dilute essential oils when applying them to your skin (in a bath or massage oil, for instance.)

Pregnant women need to be careful about using essential oils. Only some essential oils are considered to be safe when used in small, well-diluted amounts. Safe oils include: geranium, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, spearmint and ylang ylang.

If you’re highly allergic or have extremely sensitive skin, do a spot test before using essential oils.

Make Your Own Aromatherapy Inhaler

This is great because you can carry the bottle in your bag or keep it in your desk (keep an extra one in your car – it’s great for road rage!) and use it whenever you need a lift.

Pour a teaspoon of coarse sea salt in a very small dark glass or PET plastic bottle and add:

10 drops Bergamot essential oil

5 drops Grapefruit essential oil

4 drops Sweet Orange essential oil

1 drop Geranium essential oil

To use, take three long, slow, deep breaths of the aroma. If you’re really stressed out, take a short break, then take three more deep breaths. You can do this up to three times.

There are many more excellent aromatherapy remedies you can quickly and easily make for yourself or someone who needs a lift. Bath salts and oils, massage oils and even aromatherapy perfumes use a few simple ingredients that pack a powerhouse of mood-lifting, stress-relieving benefits. Try making some the next time you need a little something special!

Disclaimer: This information is for educational purposes only. It is not intended to treat, prevent, diagnose, or cure any condition.

If an individual finds themselves in an anxiety inducing situation or is feeling especially stressful, aromatherapy is a very fast, easy and effective way to alleviate those feelings. Simply inhaling lavender, rose, mandarin, lemon balm or clary sage can almost instantly increase an individuals their sense of calm and decrease their sense of stress. Another effective way to use aromatherapy to lessen stress is to essential oils while getting a massage. Burning an aromatherapy candle provides even more punch. Both are an excellent way to relieve stress by using aromatherapy. Being massaged with essential oils works especially well because one is combining the power of massage therapy with aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is such an effective and powerful way to relieve stress because you don’t have to go to a gym, lie down or pop a pill. There are no side effects, (unless you are allergic, perform a spot test so that you are sure) you can take it with you and instantly make yourself feel better. You can carry around a little lavender in your purse, if you are at work, you can use a diffuser. So you can experience the benefits of aromatherapy from anywhere. It can become your traveling stress buster. Aromatherapy works especially well in helping to cheer us up, feel balanced, become more energized and even to calm us.

And while there are certain aromatherapy scents and oils that are known to promote the reduction of stress, it is really best to go with the scent that calms you. If peppermint does it for you, use peppermint, if geranium does it for you, use geranium. In many cases it comes down to a personal preference, and that is just fine. You do not have to use a certain scent just because others tout its properties. Instead you may want to do a little experimentation and see what reacts best with your body to give you the feelings or state of being that you are looking for. To really multiply the power of aromatherapy to relieve stress, you may want to common essential oils or candles with other relaxing activities. For example, taking a hot bath that has drops of essential oils and while burning an aromatherapy candle will exponentially increase the effectiveness of aromatherapy to relieve stress. Remember to play around with various scents. You may even want to combine some scents to get a particular scent that you enjoy or you increase the power of its’ properties. If you are unfamiliar with creating essential oil blends, you could take a course or find some good information at your library or over the internet.

Yes it’s true, aromatherapy is often a fragrant aroma that is pleasing the sense of smell. However it is much more than that, aromatherapy can be a big help in promoting relaxation, suppressing appetite, bringing both physical and mental healing to the body, and in enhancing sensuality.

This can be accomplished with candles, oils, inhalers, or diffusers and when the scent of the herbs or essential oils released into the room you will experience many benefits.

Some of these benefits may be directly absorbed into the skin by use of aromatic baths, oils, massages, and lotions.

The essential oils and herbs are varied and they all have different properties and while some are helpful with skin conditions, or arthritis, others may help stimulate the mind, increase your energy or even enhance excitement and create a romantic atmosphere.

Citrus is very good in increasing your energy and happiness and Lavender is known for bringing relaxation and peace. Some herbs and essential oils are sensual and natural aphrodisiacs.

In creating an atmosphere of romance choose Patchouli and Sandalwood, which are two essential oils that are natural aphrodisiacs and you can easily purchase aromatic candles that have these essential oils added to them. The oils may also be added to the candles or a diffuser for a wonderfully natural and aroma that will help enhance your romantic setting.

You can also make sensually scented air fresheners. This is a great way to create a romantic atmosphere in a short time. If you’d like to create your own air freshener get a spray or pump bottle, 1-½ ounces of distilled water, 1-½ ounces of Vodka and then 20 to 30 drops of your selected essential oil. Mix the ingredients in the bottle. You may want to create the air freshener 24 hours before you plan to use it so that all of the oils can mix well.

Another aphrodisiac is a sensual bath oil that will stimulate the senses and leave you smelling exotic.

The geranium is a very interesting plant and can be grown just about anywhere in the world. However, the geranium plant (pelargonium adoranitissimum) originated in Africa and did not get introduce into Europe until about 1690. However there are only certain species which can be used to produce Geranium Essential Oil such as lemon plant or Geranium Roberta which have a lemony scent to them.

The essential oil from geraniums is distilled from the leaves, stalks and flowers of the plant and is usually a light yellow green colour and has a bitter taste.

Although essential oil from a geranium is a particular good refreshing and stimulating oil it also has great sedative properties also. This is especially good for treating nervous tension and depression. But in no way should Geranium Essential Oil be confused with those oils which have sleeping properties. In fact Geranium Essential Oil has stimulating properties and should not be used late at night.

When looking back in history you will find many ancient cultures who believed that Geranium Oil was great in helping to eliminate certain types of cancer as well as mending bones which had been broken. But today it is more well known as being an affective aid in such problems as pre-menstrual tension, excessive fluid retention, menopausal problems, uterine and breast cancers and those conditions which involve fluctuating hormone levels. It is especially effective in helping to treat endometriosis. The sedative properties of the oil allow a person to become relaxed and thus deal with any pain or discomfort that they may be feeling caused by this debilitating disease.

As well as having stimulating and sedative properties, Geranium Essential Oil is also an antiseptic, because of it being a flowering oil. Geranium oil can be included in to a mouthwash or as a gargle for those people suffering from sore or infected throats. However, although geranium essential has a nice flowery scent the taste is bitter and for this reason many people avoid using it.

Another good use for geranium essential oil is for those who have skin disorders such as excessively dry skin (eczema) or oily skin. There have been a number of positive results reported in regard to the use with geranium oil for such problems. Not only does it help to balance the skin but it also helps to sedate any inflamed tissue that has been caused either by shingles or burns.

One thing about geranium oil is that is blends well with most other essential oils and you could always mix it with others to produce a massage oil or to inhale it (a drop placed on a tissue or pillow is sufficient) to release the refreshing qualities of it. However, remember that geranium essential oil should only be used when diluted in a base oil, gel or lotion and not on its own.

Nowadays, almost everybody experience stress in his life. Stress term describes any mental, emotional or physical reaction that is abnormal. Stress is a natural part of our life. Sometimes it is beneficial because it keep us focused and persistent on our goal (work, study, etc.), but generally stress is one of the major threat of our mental and physical health. Feeling stress, especially on a daily basis and for a long period, may cause several health disorders, such as anxiousness, headaches, blood pressure, hair loss, depression, even heart attach. According to recent surveys, the 3 major causes of stress in developed world are job, family and health issues.

Many stress management strategies have been developed recently by psychologists. However, nobody can claim that every patient who may follow his treatment will totally eliminate stress from his life. In this article we will present you some of the most efficient aromatherapy tips that can help you reduce stress level and achieve emotional and physical well-being.

Throughout history, some scented plants and their aromatic water have been used for relaxing and smoothing purposes. Holy basil is a native herb of India (where it is known as tulsi), sacred plant of the Hindu civilization and used for thousands of years for healing. Scientific studies on natural properties of Holy Basil have found that it reduces body hormones named corticosterone and cortisol, which are intimately connected with stress, anxiety and mental clarity. Consequently, Holy Basil is one of the best antidepressant therapeutic grades and its essential oils are highly recommended for stress alleviation.

Other, more well-known, essential oils which can be used for soothing nervous tension and reducing stress are: Lavender essential oil, Ylang-Ylang essential oil, Chamomile essential oil and Geranium essential Oil. Lavender’s scent has calming and anti-depressant properties. Ylang-Ylang is described as euphoric essential oil that helps in uplifting mood. Chamomile essential oil can relax body and mind and can provide restful and peaceful sleep. Geranium oil, is another sedative and relaxing essential oil, that can balance adrenaline.

Before, suggesting some aromatherapy recipes for stress relief, I want to underline that dealing with essential oils might be dangerous especially for inexperienced persons. Keep in mind that essential oils are concentrated potent substances and should never be placed directly on skin. Use carrier (base) oil for dilution and after you can apply it on skin. Moreover, remember that only few essential oils can be taken internally and used during pregnancy.

Aromatherapy oils can be used in burners and diffusers. Add 5-10 drops of your favourite essential oil to water in the bowl and heat it. Sit back and relax, while the essential oil vaporises and its perfume creates a soothing atmosphere. Another way to benefit from essential oils is by inhaling them. Put few drops on a tissue or a cotton pad, put your nose near and just inhale. Keep in mind, that this is the easiest and the only one way to benefit from essential oils when you are outside your home and you want to relieve tension (at work for example).

Additionally, you can reduce stress with aromatherapy bath and massage. Add 4-6 drops of essential oil to your warm bath water and stay in it for at least 15 minutes, allowing the oil to penetrate your skin and indulge yourself with the advantageous vapours. Finally, you can add 5 drops of essential oil to every 10ml of base oil and massage your body. The ideal parts of your body for relaxing massage are around the neck, shoulders and back.

In conclusion, stress is an unavoidable piece of our modern way of living, but there are some easy to follow techniques that can enhance the body ability to cope with emotional and physical stress. The most sweet-scented is Aromatherapy.
